Vintage 1930s necklace featuring pink and clear glass faceted beads set in rolled gold. Rolled gold necklaces were popular from 1914 until the late 1940s. These necklaces were handmade, they provided work for injured soldiers returning from the war.
Rolled gold is a hybrid metal consisting of fine layers of gold which are fused by heat to create one or both sides of the base metal of brass or copper, The layers are rolled into sheets and contain 5% of gold. The process was patented in England 1817, it became popular in the 1920s and 1930s being used in high-quality costume jewellery.
